About our Giclee Print Maker
For centuries artists have used traditional printmaking methods of etching, serigraph, woodcut, lithography and most recently digital fine art printmaking to create both original prints and reproductions. Prints allow the artistisan to reach a wider market with a product that is both more accessible and more affordable. Traditional prints have often been created by collaboration between the artist and a master printmaker. The advent of new inkjet printing technology has only enhanced this special partnership.
The affordability and ease of use of inkjet printers has made the production of fine art prints extremely popular. At the same time, the overabundance of low quality prints being produced by unskilled technicians has caused some people to be dubious of this type of printing. There are a lot of start-up companies making a bad name for digital fine art printmaking. However, niche studios like Old Town Editions, the Alexandria, VA studio that produces all of my work, only create digital fine art prints for artists, museums, galleries and photographers.
A short list of some of Old Town’s long standing clients include the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, the National Museum of American History, the World Bank, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Studios like Old Town Editions are set apart because they offer the highest quality and service in this specialized field. This is done by meticulously calibrating equipment and color profiling work flow. This is a high skill and costly process.
Like its forerunners, digital fine art printmaking is a true craft. The work that goes into preparing the image for digital printing is just as labor intensive as the traditional methods. Many numbers of proofs are pulled and skilled technicians are involved in the adjusting of color and tone. Old Town Editions works very closely with me to make sure that every detail is perfect. The focus is not only on faithfully reproducing the artwork, but also on creating a print that will stand on its own as a quality piece of artistry.
My prints are also printed on the finest canvas and papers available ....established brands that have the highest archival ratings (100 years or more) by independent longevity research organizations. The papers are all acid free and several are 100% rag. The canvas is optical brightener free.
The digital image capture equipment used for my pieces is also the best for the reproduction of art and artifacts of all sizes. This system is the Better Light Super 6K digital scanning back paired with a Cambo Legend 4×5 view camera. Lighting is two 900 watt North Light copy lights with UV filters to protect the art and artifacts from UV exposure. This system allows the capture of details of the original artwork that are barely visible to the human eye.
Note: all prints are shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity from the Printer.
